About ADHD Therapy
Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects both children and adults. ADHD makes it difficult for a person to concentrate or stay focused and sit still for a prolonged period of time. People with this condition not only have trouble paying attention but also regulating their behavior and emotions. Executive Functions or the ability to motivate yourself towards future goals are frequently impaired. This may manifest as rapidly moving between tasks, keeping you from focusing on and completing important things you need to do at the office, school, or at home.
ADHD can make it very difficult to perform academically and to succeed in various fields. The good news is that through a combination of medication and behavioral training the worst symptoms of ADHD can be mitigated. This includes strategies to overcome impulses, improve time management, as well as organizational proficiency. Managing ADHD productively takes a lot more than a prescription to Ritalin. Although medication is not the whole solution to problems resulting from ADHD, it can be a major help, and Tatiana Pritchard, PMHNP-BC, FNP-BC is licensed to prescribe such medications if they are warranted for your treatment. Stimulant and non stimulant medications are considered the Gold Standard, or the most effective modality, in treatment of ADHD.
Not everyone who displays inattention and distractibility has ADHD. Some inattention and mind-wandering are normal for all adults and children. Attention and memory difficutlties are common problem occuring in persons with depression, PTSD, and anxiety. Hence, receiving a full psychiatric evaluation is an important step in determining if your symptoms are due to ADHD or other conditions. It typically takes multiple visits to establish diagnosis of ADHD, and not always ADHD can be treated first before treating underlying mood or anxiety disorders.
Regardless of what is causing your inattention and mind-wandering, Tatiana Pritchard, PMHNP-BC, FNP-BC can give you tools to help you gain more control over your thoughts.
